About Rubies: The birthstone for July, the ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum. Historically, it has symbolized love and passion, considered an aid to firm friendship, and believed to ensure beauty. It can range in color from purplish or bluish red to a yellowish red, but the finest color is a vivid, almost pure spectral red with a very faint undertone of blue, which are considered the finest. The ruby is a very brilliant stone and is also a very hard, durable, and wearable stone.
About Sapphire: Sapphire is one of the two gem varieties of corundum, the other being the red ruby. The sapphire is a very sacred stone in folklore. It was said to be the Stone of Truth and predates the diamond in wedding rings as a symbol of fidelity and consistency. This stone was said to be so holy that it could strike down venomous creatures and cause evil spirits to flee at the sight of it. In the bible, sapphire is consistently described as being around the Throne of God. Sapphire was one of the designated precious stones of the high priest's breastplate (Exodus 28:15).
